How to Measure Bulk Cargo Transportation

In modern logistics and trade, bulk cargo transportation, as an important mode of transportation for bulk commodities, is widely used in the transportation of non-packed goods such as coal, ore, grain, and cement. Due to the special form of bulk cargo transportation, which is usually granular or powdery, its measurement methods differ greatly from those of ordinary container transportation. Accurate measurement not only concerns the fairness of cargo transfer but also directly affects the cost control and economic benefits of enterprises.

1. Common Measurement Methods of Bulk Cargo Transportation

1. Waterline Measurement Method

Waterline measurement is one of the most commonly used measurement methods in bulk cargo sea transportation. Its principle is to measure the draft depth of the ship before and after loading, combined with the ship's discharge table to calculate the weight of the cargo. This method is suitable for large-scale bulk cargo transportation where weighbridges or belt scales cannot be used, especially widely used in international maritime transportation. Although waterline measurement has low cost and simple operation, its accuracy is affected by various factors such as ship structure, water surface conditions, and the experience of measurement personnel, so it is usually used as an estimation method.

2. Weighbridge Weighing

In land transportation or port loading and unloading processes, weighbridges are the most direct measurement tools. Vehicles or trains are weighed before and after loading, and the net weight of the cargo is determined by the difference in weight between the two weighings. This method is accurate in measurement and suitable for short-distance transportation or trade settlement, but not suitable for maritime transportation.

3. Belt Scale Measurement

In ports or ship loading sites, belt scales are often used for measurement during the continuous conveyance of bulk cargo. Installed on the conveyor belt, they can record the weight of the conveyed material in real time. The advantages of belt scales are high efficiency and continuous data, suitable for large-scale, high-speed operation environments. However, due to factors such as belt tension, humidity, and uneven material distribution, belt scales need to be calibrated regularly to ensure accuracy.

4. Radar or Laser Scanning Technology

With the development of science and technology, some advanced ports have begun to use radar or laser scanning technology to measure the volume of cargo in the yard, and then convert it to weight by density calculation. This method is suitable for cargo storage and inventory management, with advantages such as non-contact, high accuracy, and automation, but the equipment cost is relatively high.

2. Control and Standards of Measurement Errors

In actual operation, various measurement methods may have errors. In order to reduce errors and improve measurement accuracy, the following measures should be taken:

- Calibrate measurement equipment regularly;

- Use multiple methods for cross-validation;

- Improve the technical level of operators;

- Establish unified industry standards and specifications.

3. Conclusion

In summary, the measurement of bulk cargo transportation is a systematic project, which requires the selection of appropriate measurement methods by combining transportation modes, operational environments, and cargo characteristics. With the development of automation and intelligent technology, the measurement of bulk cargo transportation in the future will be more accurate and efficient, and will gradually move towards digitalization and intelligence. For relevant enterprises, establishing a scientific and reasonable measurement system is a key link to improve operational efficiency and market competitiveness.
